Role |
Relieve nasal congestion by shrinking blood vessels in the nose.
Available as a pill or liquid both over-the-counter and by
prescription. Nasal sprays or drops may be used in acute
situations, but only in the short-term (two to three days) due
to addictive properties. |

Side effects |
Can cause nervousness, sleeplessness, heart palpitations or
elevations in blood pressure. If the nasal spray is used more
than three consecutive days, it may cause even more nasal
congestion, an effect known as rebound rhinitis. |

Common choices |
Over-the-counter and prescription strengths of pseudoephedrine
(Sudafed), phenylephrine (Neo-Synephrine) and
phenylpropanolamine. |
