Role

Relieve sneezing, itching, watery eyes and runny nose by blocking the effects of histamine, a substance produced by the body during an allergic reaction. Less effective in relieving nasal congestion. Available in tablet, capsule, nasal spray, liquid or injection form, both over-the-counter and by prescription.  
     
  Side effects Most older antihistamines cause drowsiness, but newer prescription medications rarely do so. The older drugs also may sometimes cause dry mouth, difficult urination, constipation and confusion.  
     
  Common choices
Over-the-counter:
brompheniramine (Dimetapp, Drixoral), cetirizine (Zyrtec), loratadine (Claritin), chlorpheniramine (Chlor-Trimeton), clemastine (Tavist), diphenhydramine (Benadryl) and triprolidine (Alleract, Actifed)  
       
  Prescription: he newer, less sedating drugs are desloratadine (Clarinex) and fexofenadine (Allegra). Other agents include acrivastine (Semprex-D), azatadine (Optimine, Trinalin), azelastine (Astelin, Astepro), carbinoxamine (Palgic), cyproheptadine (Periactin), hydroxyzine (Vistaril), levocetirizine (Xyzal), methdilazine (Tacaryl) and olopatadine (Patanase).
