Role |
Relieve sneezing, itching, watery eyes and runny nose by
blocking the effects of histamine, a substance produced by the
body during an allergic reaction. Less effective in relieving
nasal congestion. Available in tablet, capsule, nasal spray,
liquid or injection form, both over-the-counter and by
prescription. |

Side effects |
Most older antihistamines cause drowsiness, but newer
prescription medications rarely do so. The older drugs also may
sometimes cause dry mouth, difficult urination, constipation and
confusion. |

Over-the-counter: |
brompheniramine (Dimetapp, Drixoral), cetirizine (Zyrtec),
loratadine (Claritin), chlorpheniramine (Chlor-Trimeton),
clemastine (Tavist), diphenhydramine (Benadryl) and triprolidine
(Alleract, Actifed) |

Prescription: |
he newer, less sedating drugs are desloratadine (Clarinex) and
fexofenadine (Allegra). Other agents include acrivastine (Semprex-D),
azatadine (Optimine, Trinalin), azelastine (Astelin, Astepro),
carbinoxamine (Palgic), cyproheptadine (Periactin), hydroxyzine
(Vistaril), levocetirizine (Xyzal), methdilazine (Tacaryl) and
olopatadine (Patanase). |
